Since we are only two weeks before Easter, I thought I would look to the future as those in the Old Testament, as the Lord would reveal to them of the Holy One who would come, in the name of the Lord, and conquer sin. The Lord took time to speak to His people through His prophet, Zechariah. The Lord gave him a word picture for the “Pierced One.”
Zechariah 12:10: “And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourn for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn.”
This obvious prophetic reference to the Cross is a dramatic witness to the ministry and power of the Holy Spirit, whose mission is to glorify the Messiah and draw hearts to Him. It explains how the outpouring of the Holy Spirit has caused and will cause Jesus’ death and sacrifice to become understood – from Pentecost until He comes again.
The revelation of Christ’s suffering and life was hidden from the “inhabitants of Jerusalem” until the Spirit came (Acts 2). Since then, it is the continuing work of the Spirit, through empowering the witness of Jesus’ disciples, that helps reveal the true nature of Jesus’ sacrifice on the Cross, just as prophesied in John 15:26: “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.”
